Cool Roofs and How They Save You Money

What makes a cool roof different?

Cool roofs use materials that reflect the sun’s heat and energy back into the atmosphere. According to the EPA, traditional roofing materials reflect between 5 and 15% of energy back into the atmosphere and absorb the remaining 85-95%. This means that when the sun beats down on your home, the roof absorbs the energy and gets hot. Materials for cool roofs, on the other hand, reflect at least 65% of the energy back into the atmosphere,

What are the benefits of a cool roof?

When energy is reflected away from your home, your roof will stay cooler and less outside heat will creep into your living space, so the air conditioning system won’t need to work as hard to cool the interior of your home. This feature means cool roofs are also good for the environment. The EPA notes, “By lowering energy use, cool roofs decrease the production of associated air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.” It also means that cools roofs are good for your wallet. A study of cool roofs in California found that, on average, cool roofs reduced energy bills by about 50 cents per square foot. What materials are available?

The type of cool roofing materials will vary depending on what kind of roof you have. In general, there are cool roof options for most residential roofing materials, like metal or asphalt shingles. Look for shingles that are Energy Star Certified. You can see several Energy Star Products on our Facebook page.
