With all of the roofing options available, asphalt shingles remain the preferred choice of homeowners. Why is that? What exactly are asphalt shingles and what is so good about them?

The Make Up

There are two types of asphalt shingles. One of which is organic, the other fiberglass. Materials such as recycled paper products and wood fibers make up the organic shingles. Fiberglass shingles, as the name suggests, are made of fiberglass. Both organic and fiberglass shingles have an asphalt coating and a granule covering. The granules, usually crushed ceramic, add protection from weather and fire to the shingles.

Asphalt Roofing ShinglesSizes and Shapes

There are several different types of asphalt shingles, each catering to differing needs. The most commonly used type of asphalt shingle is called the three-tab shingle. It fits under the strip shingle category. Strip shingles are long sets of tabbed shingles. Interlocking shingles are individuals that fit together with tabs and slots and are used in exceptionally wind-prone areas. Laminated shingles are tabbed shingles with an added layer to create a deeper, three-dimensional look. Large format shingles are without tabs or cutouts and are larger than other shingles. They cover more area using less shingles.

There are many benefits to using asphalt shingles. They are the most affordable roofing option. With all of the various shapes, sizes, textures, and colors, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a home design they won’t compliment. Asphalt shingles are durable and resistant to environmental harms as well as fire. They also require little maintenance.

Asphalt shingles are the most commonly used roofing material for good reason. Their design, protection capability, and durability make them a good fit for any home. For more information about asphalt shingle roofing, please contact us.
